Lithium-ion-polymer (LiPo) packs are the successors to the well-established lithium-ion (LiIon) packs. The primary advantage of LiPo batteries is their exceptional capacity-to-size ratio. They are compact yet maintain a high current capacity, making them suitable for virtually any AEG replica. LiPo batteries do not suffer from memory effect, allowing for frequent charging without the need for complete discharge. In fact, frequent charging is beneficial for this type of battery.

It is crucial to ensure that a LiPo pack is not discharged below 3V per cell and not overcharged above 4.2V per cell. Another benefit of LiPo packs is their low self-discharge rate, losing only about 3-5% of their energy per month when not in use. However, it is essential to monitor the pack during extended storage to prevent discharge below the permissible minimum value (3V per cell), which could lead to irreversible chemical reactions and potential damage, including the risk of ignition. An unused LiPo pack should ideally maintain an average charge of approximately 70%.

When used correctly, LiPo packs typically have a lifespan of 500-700 cycles. A critical factor is the temperature at which LiPo packs operate. Unlike other batteries, LiPo cells perform well at low temperatures, but they should be charged at room temperature. To maintain LiPo batteries in optimal condition, they should be balanced during charging using the service plug that most LiPo packs feature. A quality LiPo charger includes a built-in balancer.
