Lithium-ion-polymer ( LiPo ) packs are the successors to the well-known lithium-ion ( LiIon ) packs. The main advantage of LiPo batteries is undoubtedly the capacity to size ratio. They are very small in size while retaining very high current capacity, which allows to choose an appropriate pack for practically every AEG replica. They have no memory effect. They can be charged very often without being discharged first. Frequent charging is beneficial for this type of battery.

It should be remembered that LiPo pack should not be discharged below 3V per cell and not overcharged above 4.2V per cell. Another advantage of LiPo packs is a low percentage of self-discharge. When not used the pack loses about 3-5% of energy per month. Keep an eye on the pack, because during a very long storage a discharge below the minimum allowable value may occur (3V per cell) and irreversible chemical reactions may cause deterioration of the pack properties including its permanent damage, in extreme cases ignition. An unused LiPo pack should be charged to approx. 70% on average.

With proper use LiPo pack life is 500-700 cycles on average. An important aspect is the temperature at which LiPo packs can work. Unlike other batteries, LiPo cells perform well at low temperatures. However they should be charged at room temperature. In order to keep LiPo batteries in good condition, they should be balanced during charging with the use of a service plug, which most LiPo packs have (a good LiPo charger has a built-in balancer).
